Romance Writer’s Austrian Alps Elopement

Kandi and Jack’s love story began with a swipe right on Bumble, but it’s been filled with unforgettable adventures and sweet, spontaneous moments ever since. From a surprise proposal on a hiking trail with their puppy to an elopement day in the Austrian Alps that felt like pure magic, their journey is a testament to finding joy in the little things and following their own path. Especially since Kandi is a romance writer! They exchanged vows surrounded by stunning alpine views, indulged in local traditions, and spent their day exactly as they imagined—stress-free, full of love, and with nature as their backdrop. For Kandi and Jack, their wedding wasn’t just a celebration, it was an adventure.

How did you meet?

We were shopping at the local grocery store, and pizzas were on sale. We both reached for the last Hawaiin pizza at the same time. Jack said I could have it, I insisted he should take it, and he said, “Why don’t we make it together?”

… Okay, just kidding. We met on Bumble. But hey, as a romance author, I can’t help but create a story now and then. ;)

What is your proposal story?

Kandi had just finished the rough draft of a book and had been working hard, so Jack suggested they go for a hike the next day. Kandi was thrilled! Their first date was a hike at Hillsborough State Park in Florida, and that’s where they were heading.

They loaded up their puppy (who was just six months old at the time) and set out on a muggy, but beautiful, Florida hike. As they walked the trail, they ended up at the big tree branching over the river, which was where they sat and talked for nearly four hours on their first date.

Jack was reminiscing about the last couple of years together, all the travels and adventures, while Kandi wrangled a very anxious puppy who was ready to get moving again.

Kandi bent down to give the puppy water while Jack dug around in his backpack for his camera. He’s a hobbyist photographer and Kandi is used to this behavior. But instead of a camera, he was searching for a ring — and when Kandi turned around again, he was down on one knee.

It’s all a little blurry from there (for both of them) but sweet words were said, tears were shed, and she said yes!

Tell us about your attire choices.

Jack donned a custom, forest green suit from Balani while Kandi opted for “The Stevie” from La Perle. The couple was going for a bohemian, nature-focused style with a dash of luxury.

What were your favorite parts of the day?

Our day was absolutely perfect — so much so that I frequently looked at our photographer and videographer and said, “this is so perfect, it feels stupid.” LOL! It was supposed to rain all day, but instead, the rain cleared up just in time for the sun to rise on the most beautiful morning. We exchanged our vows in the Austrian Alps with cow bells as our background music. After our first dance, we ate breakfast at the charming Gramai Alm before changing into our hiking boots, loading up our packs, and heading down to Achensee. We caused quite the scene on the ferry to the trailhead, where we did a slow-paced three-mile hike along the lake that provided the most stunning views around every corner. We loved stopping for a picnic halfway through and to read letters from our family and friends. After our hike, we had the traditional “Hat Dinner” at the Gramai Alm and finished the evening with a private hour at the spa enjoying the warm water under a sky of stars. We chose to elope because we wanted the day to just be for us, and it was absolutely magical. There was zero stress — just nature, laughter, and love.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?

There is so much pressure to have a huge party and spend a fortune on one night for dinner, drinks, and a venue. If that’s your style — go for it! But don’t be afraid to break the mold and ask yourself and your partner what makes the most sense for you. If adventure is calling, answer. Soak in the day just the two of you (that’s who it’s all about, after all!) and have a small reception with family and friends after. Regardless of what kind of celebration you choose, take time to laugh and play with your significant other on such a momentous day, and find a photographer/videographer who understand your style and are eager to capture your day the way you want. I still look back on our pictures and videos frequently and can feel the magic as if it’s our wedding day all over again. That’s what I wish for other couples!
