Wedding on a Mountain Top | Max Patch in Western North Carolina

August 25, 2012
Asheville, North Carolina

Welcome to Max Patch–one of the most iconic and prettiest places on the Appalachian Trail, affording 360 dgree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Personally, this is one of my favorite places in the world. Hubs proposed to me here, and my in-laws live by, so in the wintertime, when it snows, we take a family ski break here.

This wedding is another example of the scenery being the most important detail. It’s also an example of the importance of friends and family at a wedding. Here, a hearty band of loved ones hike up to the top of one of the most beautiful places in the Appalachian Mountains and bear witness to two people in love committing their lives to each other.

Why a Mountain Wedding?

Place was very important to us when thinking about where we would share our vows. We’ve spent countless days hiking and camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains and on Max Patch. It is the stunning 360 degree views of those mountains that we love.

Your favorite moment of the day.

Our wedding party was on a knoll just off the mountain top. When I walked down the aisle, I crested the summit down along the Appalachian trail. My favorite moment was cresting the mountain top and seeing all our loved ones on the knoll out in the sunshine against the mountain range backdrop. I started crying and gasping for air as I took my first steps towards my soon to be husband.

Anything you’re glad you did?

  • Let go of the “shoulds” and did what we wanted.
  • Worked with our friend as a wedding planner.
  • Wore Chaco sandals on the mountain, then changed into cute shoes for the reception.

Anything you wish you had done?

  • I wish I had thought through the transportation logistics a bit more so our guests had less to stress about.
  • Wore sunscreen.

How did you choose your vendors?

Word of mouth and friends

What is your very best hindsight advice?

It was well worth the money to work with a wedding planner who also did day-of coordination. She helped us think through everything ahead of time so when it came to the wedding we really weren’t that stressed out.
