Romantic Golden Barn Wedding in The Allegheny Mountains

The first time Rob met Britt was through her sister (and his friend) and, after asking about Britt, Rob was met with a resounding “absolutely not!” Despite the lack of permission, fate took its course and the two clicked. Several years later, on a trip to Ireland, Rob surprised Britt with a beautiful ring at the scenic Dingle Peninsula. “When in Ireland, ask an Irish girl to marry you!” he said to his family and friends later. When planning their wedding, they knew they wanted to have their reception in a barn while still incorporating some glam accents to offset the rustic venue. Pops of gold and red created a beautiful palette alongside the neutral tones throughout the event space. From the bouquet charm that allowed Britt to walk down the aisle with both of their fathers to the vintage rug she had always dreamed of exchanging vows on, their wedding day was truly one of love and intimacy. Their carefree spirits carried on throughout the day – despite the rainy 30-degree weather, the pair made the most of it and enjoyed the photo shoot with their umbrellas. Britt and Rob encourage all couples to do a first look if the opportunity is available. “It was such an intimate moment and the photos that Mike was able to capture during this moment were some of our favorites! It truly was an incredible moment to see Rob’s face as he turned around and saw me as his bride for the first time, and it was a moment I wouldn’t give back for anything!”

Why did you choose the Mountains for your wedding?

We chose the mountains for our wedding because of what the scenery had to offer. It was so beautiful in the summer and we could not imagine what it would look like in the Fall with all of the leaves… and we were certainly not disappointed! It was definitely not like anything we could find around us in the city. We also loved that all the mountains had to offer for our wedding weekend as a whole. The hiking, bonfires, views of the lake, etc all contributed to why we chose the mountains for our big day.

Wedding day theme:

Our palette was predominately neutrals and golds, with pops of deep red and burgundy in our flowers. The fall leaves and red barn offered enough color that I wanted everything else to be natural and elegant, a bit softer… and it all tied in beautifully!

Where did you find your inspiration?

While a handful of our ideas came from Pinterest, the vast majority of it came from our wedding planner & floral designer, Charlotte Jarrett from Charlotte Jarrett Events. She implicitly understood my vision and ran with it. She even pushed us to step out of the box a bit — for instance, it was her idea to do a gold sequin table cloth at our sweetheart table. I was so hesitant, and it turned out to be one of my favorite details!

How did you choose to personalize your wedding?

I personalized our wedding by pulling in details that are things we enjoy, like spiked cider and vintage rugs! We wanted to take a little piece of “Fall” things we love and incorporate them into our big day.

What was your favorite part of the reception?

Seeing everyone dance and have a great time. I had never seen so many people dancing at a wedding, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves! It is the best feeling to know that so many of your guests enjoyed your wedding day as much as you did!

What are three things you’re super glad you did?

  1. Had someone that we know and love (my brother in law) marry us! You never think about how many photos your officiant appears in (basically all of your ceremony photos). I am so happy that it is my brother in law in all of those photos as opposed to someone that we do not know. It also makes the photos even more special to us!
  2. Prepare for the weather! Buy the umbrellas. Have the bridesmaids bring their rain boots. “Better to be prepared” has never been as true as on our wedding day!
  3. Wear my hair up! I always wear my hair down and it was so nice that through the wind, rain, dancing, etc it was up and I didn’t have to mess with it. One last thing to worry about!

Anything you wished you hadn’t done or worried about?

  1. Spent money on small details that no one noticed. While people do notice a lot of the details, we wasted a ton of money on things such as straws and cocktail napkins that didn’t get used (or noticed!!). All of the little details add up. Put it towards the bigger and more important items, such as flowers.
  2. I spent a lot of time and a lot of research trying to figure out the best wedding favors. I ended up going with doozies, which everyone always uses! I wish I had just pulled the trigger and moved on to the next item long before I did.
  3. In general I wish I had taken the time to eat! Everyone says you never eat and in the moment I was so excited by everything going on that I never really took the time to eat. Everyone raved about the food and the cake, and I didn’t even really enjoy any!

What was the biggest challenge in planning your mountain wedding and how did you overcome it?

One of the biggest challenges that we faced was realizing that we wouldn’t have immediate access to things and places for last minute errands like we’re used to in the city. For instance, the nearest party store to get balloons inflated was over 45 minutes away. We really had to think out every single detail and haul in a LOT that we wouldn’t be able to purchase once we got there. Thinking out every detail in advance is the way to go…. and a packing checklist definitely helped us accomplish all of our errands before we left for Deep Creek.

How did you find and choose your vendors?

We found our photographer (Mike Busada) through several friends and family friends of ours who have used him. After seeing their wedding photos I knew hands down he was our guy! Our Wedding Planner & Florist, Charlotte Jarrett, did my sister’s wedding as well. I knew that both of these vendors were 100% the way to go, and we didn’t interview with anyone else. Chanteclaire Farm was actually the first and only wedding venue that Rob and I looked at. We both loved it and knew it was the place as soon as we saw it, so why overwhelm ourselves? We signed a check for the deposit that day and got to cross that off our check list and sit back and enjoy our engagement for a bit before we had to dive into planning.

What is your best piece of advice to other mountain brides who are planning their weddings?

Plan for ALL types of weather. The mountains are so unpredictable! We had gone hiking on Thursday when we got to Deep Creek and it was mid 70’s and sunny. Two days later, it was mid 30’s and raining for our wedding day…. accompanied by some snow flurries. My biggest piece of advice would be to come prepared and just embrace the weather. You can’t change it so there is no point in stressing over it. While we were freezing and it was not ideal, I was so glad that I had bought umbrellas and all of the girls wearing their Hunter Boots and Duck Boots certainly is something we’ll always remember. The umbrellas also provided opportunity for some really fun photos. Prepare for all of it, and go with it!
