The nip of fall is in the air in the mountains Though the days are still warm, the nights are calling for cozy sweaters and long-stored-away socks. So it’s time for some fall wedding inspiration. This week, I have a fresh fall wedding cake round up for you. In fact, I’m in the process of writing an eBook on wedding cakes that’s just for Mountain Brides, so I have cakes on my mind all the time lately. Here are my top five picks for Fall Wedding Cakes for Mountain Brides:
1. Naked Wedding Cake
Carried Away Cuisine via Snippet and Ink
Naked cakes adorned with fresh or gum paste fruits or berries are my favorite because the represent the abundance of harvest and the simplicity of mountain life. In fact, naked cakes come from the mountains. They’re from the Southern Appalachian Mountains, where they’re called “stack cake.”Appalachian friends and family would each bring a layer of cake to a wedding and the brides family would spread apple butter between each layer. The tradition helped offset the traditionally prohibitive cost of a formal wedding cake. I just love that the naked cake represents community and simplicity!
2. Gilded

Metallics are show stoppers year round but the richness of gold or copper is especially lovely for fall weddings. Pair with rich fall colors like deep green and eggplant for a decadent look, or with rustic elements like wood and lots of white and neutrals for a soft romantic look that still feels appropriate to the season.
3. Woodland Details

Anyone who has lived in the mountains knows that fall is a magical time. In the East, the forests light up with red, yellow, orange, and even purple. In the West, the golden Aspens shake in the breeze, filtering the sunlight into soft, dappled loveliness. Everywhere woodland creatures are preparing for the long mountain winter. What better way to honor fall than to incorporate woodland details or toppers on your wedding cake. Deer, fox, and rabbit figurines are charming options. You can also adorn your cake with gum paste pinecones, autumn-inspired leaves, or faux bois.
4. French Croquembouche

The rich texture and decadent carmel color of French croquembouche is perfect for a fall color palette. Pair with rich green, bright gold, and deep orange reception details for a classic fall wedding theme and color palette.
Quilled Wedding Cakes

There’s something so folksy about quilling, and although this technique can be used during any season, the crafty nature of quilled words and shapes reminds me of arts and crafts, which reminds me of back to school, which reminds me of fall :-) Quilling comes from the craft of rolling strips of paper and glueing them together to make intricate designs. Quilling lends itself well to fondant cake decorations. This modern cake uses quilled teardrop shapes, but your baker can also quill a monogram, your names, your wedding date, or words like “love.”
