Whitewater Rafting Inspired Wedding in Colorado

Carly and Bryce wanted their wedding to match their personalities. It was outdoors, relaxed and an epic celebration of two families and friends coming together. They chose lots of green and dark purples, and beautiful earthy tones.

The bridesmaids were in dark green dresses but the cold weather also called for matching white fleeces and dark green Ugg boots. The men all wore Carhartts and flannel, which ended up fitting in perfectly with the mountain theme. The wedding gown was long sleeve lace and very elegant and flowing. There was no veil, just a small flower clip in the bride’s hair. The groom’s suit was a dark grey with dark purple and dark blue accents.

But above all, they wanted their guests to be relaxed and enjoy the rustic mountain environment.

How did you meet?

We met on a Grand Canyon rafting trip and then ending up living next door to each other in a tiny town in Alaska. Our friendship and relationship blossomed from there.

What is your proposal story?

Under the fireworks on the Fourth of July, surrounded by mountains and our close friends, Bryce gave Carly his great grandmother’s ring.

What was the most important to the two of you while planning? Was there anything that you chose to splurge on or skip?

We didn’t want it to be too formal and wanted everyone to be relaxed and ready to have a good time. We went more casual in a few aspects including a buffet of tacos instead of a sit-down dinner, had a friend marry us and had the bridesmaids in Uggs and the groomsmen in Carhartts and flannel. We choose to splurge on a photographer we really loved though. We knew we would probably have fun no matter what but having someone there to capture those moments was the most important to us.

What were your favorite parts of the day? (memories and stories)

It is so hard to choose! We were just so happy to be in the mountains with all the people that we love. Everyone drinking margaritas and eating tacos (our favorite), dancing or hanging out by the fire. One of our favorite moments is probably the flower girls carrying around a 30-pack of Rainier beer.

Tell us about your wedding flowers.

They were beautiful! We asked for earthy colors with a focus on dark purple and ferns. The centerpieces were vintage looking glass bottles of all shapes and sizes, which was subtle but still really pretty.

Tell us about your wedding cake.

Our wedding cake was small and included a plate of large cookies and cake pops that guests could take with them at the end of the night. The cake looked just like the trunk of an aspen tree with our initials “carved” into it, and Fall colors accenting the cake and cookies and cake pops to distribute to the guests.

Please describe any DIY, handmade, or personal details.

We had a pair of wooden paddles that our roommate etched our names into that we had guests sign instead of a guest book. We now have them hanging in our house.

Did you include any family heirlooms or special traditions?

Carly wore her grandmother’s sapphire necklace and borrowed her mother’s sapphire earrings. The wedding rings were Bryce’s grandparents and have their wedding date from 1954 engraved on them.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?

Don’t get too worked up. It can seem like a lot of work and a lot of pressure, but make sure you have fun and do what you want to do.

Why a Mountain Wedding?

We live and play in the mountains and rivers of Colorado and wanted to share this place with the people we love.

How did you find your vendors?

We choose most of our vendors from suggestions from our location (Camp Hale). They had obviously done a lot of wedding and gave good suggestions.
