Romantic Pink, White and Lavender Banff Wedding

Kirsty and Kris in Banff Alberta

This stunning mountain wedding combines elegant details with soft pastel pinks and lavenders. Hints of gold create a simple yet très elegant look. It truly is beautiful. When I look at a wedding like this, I’m of course taken with the gorgeous bouquet, the lovely handmade details, and the stunning centerpieces. But what I absolutely adore about this wedding is the joy and laughter on the bride’s face nearly every moment of the day. Kirsty chose to be happy and joyful, to savor each moment, even though her wedding was almost ruined by the Alberta floods, even thought they had bouts of torrential rain on their wedding day, even though there were little things here and there that “went wrong,” Kirsty and Kris enjoyed their day to the fullest and that is the most beautiful thing.

Why a Mountain Wedding?

My husband and I loved spending weekends in Canmore and Banff while dating; we had talked about getting married in the picturesque setting before we got engaged. It seemed like the perfect way to be close to home so I could plan it and still feel like a destination wedding.

Where did you find your inspiration?

I looked through websites, magazines and Pinterest – I love softer shades, golds and lilacs for wedding colours, which was great for summer. I wanted an elegant yet simple style throughout.

What were some personal details you incorporated?

I am from Scotland, so we managed to incorporate small Scottish touches such as the kilts, scottish thistle flower and so on, without it being too themed.

Your favorite moment of the day.

After we were married, driving around in the classic car we rented before the reception- just a moment for the two of us, talking about the ceremony, it was a gorgeous day and the mountains were beautiful.

Three things you’re glad you did.

  • I almost spent a fortune on a dress, I am glad I didn’t in the end.
  • Stayed in a different hotel from my husband the night before the wedding, not seeing each other until I walked down the aisle the next day was extra special.
  • Found an excellent photographer – I spent some time looking for the best photographer for us. These photographs are your memories. You have to click with that person as they are with you all day. It is amazing how any issues you had with your wedding disappear when you go through your wedding photographs.

Anything you wish you hadn’t done?

Stressed so much about finding the perfect dress. I had a specific lace, fit and flare style in mind and just couldn’t find something I loved – in the end, the style I picked was completely different and I loved it.

What was the best piece of wedding advice you got?

Don’t sweat the small stuff – all the details you planned will not be perfect on the day. You can’t be the coordinator and the bride, so little things will not be as you planned. ENJOY your day with your new husband.

What piece of wedding planing advice do you wish you followed?

I actually stayed pretty calm and organized throughout the planning process, although I did almost destroy our printer in a fit of rage while making our wedding invitations, so I asked my fiance for help (take it if you can get it). You have to know what you want but not over-think everything. It is a mini part-time job, which you have to accept.

Anything you wish you hadn’t worried about?

Our wedding was just after the Alberta floods – the road to Canmore opened up a few days before the wedding. That was a stressful week, we had family staying with us and no guarantee of a wedding. Everything worked out in the end, but I wish I had been able to relax more – a lot of tears!

Anything You wish you had known about sooner rather than later?

The flood! Actually, unless you have a fiance who is into planning a wedding – fiances should not be expected to be as enthusiastic about the planning process as you are. They asked you to marry them, they love you, don’t be upset if they are not as excited about table settings as you are. As long as they are supportive just let them go with the flow.

How did you choose your vendors?

A LOT of research, I planned the wedding myself and had a specific budget, so I made sure I found a balance between quality and affordability. Meet with all your vendors before you sign anything.

What is your very best advice to other mountain brides?

Mountain weddings can add up with vendors especially if you include any out of town delivery charges. Make sure you are getting the best deal and don’t be afraid to ask for the best price. Planning it yourself can be a lot of work, if you don’t have the time or inclination, get some help from friends and family.
